Believe it or not, the way your practice is run plays a significant role in the talent that works there. Forward thinking practices that use the latest technology have a greater advantage in acquiring the best candidates. Here’s why.

Millennials are a huge part of the workforce. They’re the ones graduating veterinary technology school and they have high expectations of their workplace. They’ve grown up in an age where they didn’t have to answer the phone to have a conversation, they don’t even use a pen and paper to write things down. From laptops to smartphones, the newest and best candidates are looking for practices who are adopting and leveraging the benefits from technology. Is your practice one of those?

Chances are, if you’re using hand-written records, using fax machines and using the phone to schedule appointments or other tasks that could be done digitally, millennials are going to lose respect and you could miss out on a larger talent pool. They may even pass on the opportunity to learn from a very experienced veterinary staff because they’re turned off by your antiquated practices.

You don’t have to be the most advanced, tech-savvy practice, but there are a few key products and features that millennials will consider when deciding whether or not to work for you.

  1. Communication – Millennials understand the desire from clients to do business digitally. They don’t want to sit on-hold to book an appointment or request a refill. It makes absolutely no sense to waste the practice’s time and the client’s time on the phone when it can be done through a click-of-a-button.
  2. Hand-written medical notes – This is a no brainer. Millennials prefer to type rather than write down information. Medical records should be input into a computer once and easily shared, rather than having to spend hours in front of a fax machine.
  3. Text capabilities – Phone calls are out, texting is in. If you haven’t adopted the ability to text with clients, this will be a key player in whether a great new hire stays with your practice or decides to leave.
  4. Social Media and the Internet – The internet and social media means everything to a millennial. If you don’t have a website or social media page that allows clients to learn more about your practice, check-out reviews and book an appointment, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity and categorizing yourself as old school.

By becoming a forward thinking practice, you are demonstrating that you understand the importance of modern technology, how businesses are adapting to client demands, and that YOU are part of the evolution of veterinary medicine. In return, your reputation as a forward thinker will not only help you retain competent staff, but will enhance your reputation as a highly sought after practice where qualified, young new recruits l will fight for positions.
