Every year when January 1st rolls around, we as a society tend to make resolutions based around our health. Whether we want to eat more veggies, kick that 4-cup-of-coffee-a-day habit, or run a marathon, our physical wellbeing is top of mind. What about our pets?

This new year, make a resolution to schedule your pet’s annual wellness checkup!

It’s common for a lot of pet owners to skip their yearly exam and just wait until their animal shows signs of sickness before taking them in, but if they already seem unhealthy, it may be too late.

Three of the most common afflictions pets face are dental disease, heart murmurs, and kidney problems –– but all three are treatable! In fact, they are more treatable the earlier you catch them. Illnesses such as these could be completely avoided or managed much more successfully with early detection.

We all lead busy lives and we know how difficult it can be to carve out time for health and wellness. Think of it this way, you may not go to the doctor every year, but if you only lived 8-15 years, you definitely would. Our pets have an accelerated life expectancy. If your cat hasn’t seen a vet in 2+ years, it’s similar to a human not seeing a doctor in 15.

Here are a few of our favorite tips to make the vet-going process easier:

  • Have multiple pets? Don’t get overwhelmed by taking them to the vet all at once. Bring them in one at a time. It’ll not only be easier on you, but it will give your pet needed 1:1 time with their doctor.
  • Carriers can be difficult for some pets –– especially cats. Ease them into it slowly by bringing their carrier out a few days prior to their appointment. Lay out their favorite toys nearby and let them get used to it. Then, when the time comes to get them inside, they’ll feel more comfortable.
  • Flexible schedule? Shoot for a Wednesday midday/early afternoon appointment. That time of week is often the slowest for practices.

Remember, it’s especially important to look out for our pets since they can’t talk and tell us if something is wrong. Be proactive and get them up-to-date on their wellness visits. They’ll be sure to thank you with a nuzzle!
